McDowell, Lester speak vows Cecily Denise Lester of Creed moor and David Matthew McDo well of Winnabow were united in marriage Saturday, October 10 at First Baptist Church in Butner. The Kev Emmanual Pegram officiated e o clock double-ring ceremony. Music was provided by Larue .niel, organist; Teresa Hiede pnem, pianist; and soloists Dennis Lester, father of the bride, and Peggy Pegram. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lester of Creed moor. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight McDowell of Winnabow. The bride, escorted by her father, was attired in a formal A-line gown of white silk with a lace bodice adorned with sequins and seed pearls. The diamond-cut back was trimmed at the neck with a satin bow. The full skirt and train were trimmed with matching lace appliques with sequins and pearls. The veil headpiece was of matching lace and trimmed in pearls. The bouquet was made of white silk roses, baby’s breath and ivy. Matron of honor was Mrs. Karen Minchew of Wake Forest. Brides maids were Mrs. Kimberly Bierstedt of Wilmington, Mrs. Jeannine Hagwood of Raleigh, cousin of the bride, Ms. Meredith Jarman of Cary, Mrs. Melissa Tatum of Leland and Mrs. Amanda ■ Richardson of Moravian halls. The attendants wore black floor-length crepe gowns, with low-cut back and crossed straps. They carried bou quets of white and yellow silk roses, baby’s breath and ivy. Best man was Dwight McDowell, father of the groom. Groomsmen were Michael McDowell of • Winnabow, brother of the groom, John Williams of Winnabow, cousin of the groom, Neal Lester of Creedmoor, brother of the bride, Darren McCain of Raleigh and Doug Tatum of Leland. The wedding was directed by William Tunstall. The register was attended by Mrs. Dana Allen and programs by Ms. Elizabeth Munn, both friends of the bride. Following the ceremony, a recep tion was hosted by the bride’s par ents and held in the fellowship hall of the church. Assisting in prepara tion and serving were Mrs. Wanda Willis, aunt of the bride, and Mrs. Susan Woodlief, friend of the bride. A rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s parents, was held on Friday, October 9, at the home of the bride. A pig-pickin’ was enjoyed by those in attendance. MRS. DAVID MATTHEW McDOWELL The bride is a graduate of North Carolina State, University with a degree in business management. She is currently employed at the Lone Security Correctional Institu tion in Butner. The groom attended the Univer sity of North Carolina at Wilming ton and is currently employed by Harborlight Corporation in Youngs ville. Following the wedding trip to the Bahamas, the couple resides in the Creedmoor area. Ruark exhibition to hang in gallery The fifth annual art exhibition sponsored by the Robert Ruark Foundation Inc. at Franklin Square Gallery will continue through November 15. Approximately 200 paintings and sculptures were entered in the juried exhibit by more than 100 artists from North Carolina and South Carolina. Judging took place Monday with artist Rose Metz eval uating the two-dimensional works and Suze Lindsay the three-dimen sional works. She has studied abroad in England and Italy. Lindsay’s hobby potting led her to the fine ceramics graduate program at Louisiana State University and to Penland School of Crafts fellow ships and artists residence program. Now an established member of the art community of western North Carolina, she lives and teaches in Asheville. Prizes will be presented to win ning artists during the awards recep tion to be held Sunday, October 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the gallery, 130 East West Street in Southport. Cash prizes will presented for best of show and for first-, second- and third-place winners of each catego ry. Honorable mentions are awarded at the discretion of the judges. In addition, special awards are present ed by the Associated Artists of S.outhport and the June Gottlieb Brown Marine Award selection. Prize amounts are $500 for best of show, $200 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. The Associated Artists of Southport award is $100 and the June Gottlieb-Brown Marine Award is $50. The Robert Ruark Foundation was established in 1989 in Southport to commemorate the literary career of Ruark, Wilmington-born journalist and novelist, through promotion and support of the cultural arts. Benna-Alutto plans Clem and Kate Alutto of South port have announced the engage ment and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Lisa Alutto of Clifton, NJ, to Matt Benna of Bridgewater, NJ, son of Joseph and Loretta Benna, also of Bridgewater. Bridge results Last week's winners in the Oak Island Duplicate Bridge Club have been announced.
